Set up a Healthy Banana Split “bar” and let your kids build their own nutritious treat!
Who wants a banana split right now? *raises hand*
Who wants a healthful, whole food, non-dinner-spoiling and fruit-rich snack? *raises hand again*
Isn’t it great when you and your kids can have the best of both worlds?
This Healthy Banana Split bar has to be one of the simplest, yummiest, most fun after-school or play-date snacks you can make!
Transform the traditionally-decadent dessert into a fun and healthful treat by trading in ice cream for rich whole milk yogurt, and choosing good-for-you toppings like fruit, nuts, seeds and antioxidant-rich dark chocolate. The flavor is so creamy and sweet, your kids won’t even miss the ice cream.
Here’s how to create a customizable banana split bar that serves up fresh fruit, dairy, plant proteins and probiotics, with only a touch of added sugar (or none at all!) It’s a snack you can feel great about serving your kids (and indulging in yourself!)
Slice ripe bananas in half lengthways and place two halves in each child’s bowl, cut side face up (for my toddler, I use half a banana cut lengthways.)
Kids love to have choices at the table, and letting them serve themselves helps them practice using utensils and taking turns. It’s an activity and a snack all rolled into one. 🙂
These are some of our favorite add-ins, because they provide yummy flavors and pretty colors while also adding to the nutrition of the Banana Splits. Sprinkle on some protein, fiber, iron and antioxidants with these toppings:
Peanuts or peanut butter
Shredded coconut (we like unsweetened)
Mini dark chocolate chips
And feel free to get creative with your toppings–use whatever you have on hand that you think your kids might like.
Then serve it as a snack, a dessert, or even breakfast. Enjoy!
